Leadership Texas , Class of 1983

HISTORY

SA100, a community wide group of women leaders, was the direct result of the inaugural Leadership Texas class experience in 1983.  While the seven Founders did not know one another before Leadership Texas, they became close friends during the year and the following process of founding the local organization for women.

After a year of traveling throughout the state and encountering new ideas and people, the founders decided they wanted to bring similar opportunities for women  in San Antonio to stimulate thought and discussion.  At the time it was the group's perception that this type of experience could greatly support and benefit women.

The group met often and worked through the creation of the organization.  One recurring concern was “what is our purpose?" and “what do we do?” After much time, discussion, listening and synthesizing the group’s thoughts, it was agreed that the purpose of the group was to come together to learn, grow and enjoy getting to know one another.

By being invited to join the group, the members by definition would have demonstrated service and leadership skills.   We sought to create a peer group rather than another item for a resume.   As a group, we did not want to create a fundraiser, gala or event of any kind since our members were leading such efforts all over town. Initially we did not want to hear from the Mayor or have a style show, although we included both experiences at least once throughout the years. Our purpose was “to be”.

The founding group came from different professions, backgrounds, and parts of the community.  The focus of creating a group culture was always to be welcoming, accepting, and encouraging of all members.   This initial approach has remained the focus of the group in selecting leadership and new members.

Our Founding Officers: Jean Carlyle, Gloria Jo Floyd, Linda Foster, Karen Hugie, Vesta Marbut, Marolyn Stubblefield, Sondra Sugerman
